Good news, the TSA has revised it's policy that determines liquid carry-ons for breastmilk (it also includes juice and formula). This is a big deal, especially for those moms who work and travel.

If you don't have time to read this right now (it is short though) the main point is that Mothers are now able to carry on more than 3oz WITH or WITHOUT their baby. There are some guidelines but it doesn't look like there is any "catch". Here's the article

Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)

WIC is a supplemental food and nutrition education program that provides vouchers to
purchase specific foods. It provides nutrition counseling to pregnant, postpartum, or
breastfeeding women, infants, and children under age five with nutritional and financial needs.
Your child’s doctor or EPSDT screening providers must refer eligible infants and children to the
local health department for additional information and a WIC eligibility determination.
The Virginia Department of Health's Nutrition Services Team is committed to practicing and
promoting good health. Contact the Nutrition Services Team at 1-888-942-3663.

Head Start

Head Start is a federally funded pre-school program that serves low-income children and their
families. Contact your local school division for more information.

Healthy Start

Some areas in Virginia have high amounts of babies born with low birth weights, late-term
miscarriages, infant deaths, and births to teenage mothers. Pregnant women in these areas
are often unable to see doctors because they do not have insurance or enough insurance. The
Virginia Healthy Start Initiative (VHSI) is designed to reduce infant deaths in these urban and
rural areas and small towns: Norfolk, Petersburg, Portsmouth, and Westmoreland County.
Information about Healthy Start can be obtained by contacting the Healthy Start Program
Coordinator at the VDH Division of Women’s and Infant’s Health at 804-864-7764.

Early Intervention Program

Early intervention services, also known as “Part C” of the Individuals with Disabilities Act
(IDEA), are available throughout Virginia to help infants and toddlers from birth through age
two who are not developing as expected or who have a medical condition that can delay
normal development. For more information, visit the Early Intervention Program website at

Resource Mothers Program

Teenagers are a group at high risk for poor birth outcomes, both medically and socially. The
Resource Mothers Program trains and supervises laywomen to serve as a social support for
pregnant teenagers and teenage parents of infants. The program helps low-income pregnant
teenagers get prenatal care and other community services, follow good health care practices,
continue in school, and encourage the involvement of the infant’s father and teens’ parents to

LLL Stafford/Quantico is happy to report that the World Breastfeeding Week Committee’s grant money was deposited and spent in full. Seeking the best deals possible, we ordered 20 copies of Breastfeeding in Combat Boots directly from Hale Publishing and also 28 copies of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, 10th edition from Amazon.com.

The following books have been distributed:

Central Rappahannock Library System (serving areas including South and North Stafford, Virginia) accepted copies of the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and copies of Breastfeeding in Combat Boots.

Quantico Base library accepted copies of the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and copies of Breastfeeding in Combat Boots.

The remaining majority of books were accepted at the Quantico Base Naval Relief Society where Parenting classes and new parent orientation is undergone. The New Parent Support Program offers classes and in-home support to new parents. We are thrilled to help add to their lending library.

Statement from Surgeon General Dr. Regina M. Benjamin on World Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7, 2011

World Breastfeeding Week provides an opportunity to highlight the benefits of breastfeeding and to encourage everyone to support mothers who want to breastfeed. One of the most highly effective preventive measures a mother can take to protect the health of her infant and herself is to breastfeed. It protects babies from many infections and illnesses, such as diarrhea and pneumonia. Children who have been breastfed have lower rates of childhood obesity. Mothers who breastfeed have a decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
The decision to breastfeed is a personal one, and a mother should not be made to feel guilty if she cannot or chooses not to breastfeed. But given the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of mothers and children, we need to do what we can to help mothers who want to breastfeed to do so successfully.
Earlier this year, I released the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding which outlines steps that can be taken to remove some of the obstacles faced by women who want to breastfeed their babies.
The Affordable Care Act has made significant progress to support breastfeeding,which include historic new insurance guidelines that will ensure millions of women receive preventive health services without a co-pay or deductible. These new guidelines, developed by the independent Institute of Medicine, require insurance companies to cover certain women’s preventive services, including breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling.
In addition, the ACA amends the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 by having employers provide reasonable break time and a place, other than a restroom, that is private and clean for a mother to express milk.
I hope World Breastfeeding Week will spark conversations and efforts that will support women who want to breastfeed.

LLL Japan sent 10.000 pocket tissues to the disaster area a few weeks ago.

This time they ordered 10.000 wet-wipes (photos attached) with the contact info for:

UNICEF Baby Hotline—LLL Japan Leaders are responding to phone calls 24 hours a day LLL Japan phone councelling Q-code for information about breastfeeding under an emergency situation TJ: They plan to deliver the wet-wipes and the information sheet “Breastfeeding Your Baby” to hospitals, birth centres, baby clinics, etc. in the disaster areas, where they have contact with mothers and babies.

LLL Japan paid for the cost from donations from LLL abroad.

Everyone Can Help Make Breastfeeding Easier, Surgeon General Says in “Call to Action”

Benjamin cites health benefits, offers steps for families, clinicians and employers
WASHINGTON, DC, Jan. 20, 2011 - Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin today issued a “Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding,” outlining steps that can be taken to remove some of the obstacles faced by women who want to breastfeed their babies.
“Many barriers exist for mothers who want to breastfeed,” Dr. Benjamin said. “They shouldn’t have to go it alone. Whether you’re a clinician, a family member, a friend, or an employer, you can play an important part in helping mothers who want to breastfeed.”
“Of course, the decision to breastfeed is a personal one,” she added, “no mother should be made to feel guilty if she cannot or chooses not to breastfeed.”
While 75 percent of U.S. babies start out breastfeeding, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, only 13 percent are exclusively breastfed at the end of six months. The rates are particularly low among African-American infants.
Many mothers who attempt to breastfeed say several factors impede their efforts, such as a lack of support at home; absence of family members who have experience with breastfeeding; a lack of breastfeeding information from health care clinicians; a lack of time and privacy to breastfeed or express milk at the workplace; and an inability to connect with other breastfeeding mothers in their communities.
Dr. Benjamin’s “Call to Action” identifies ways that families, communities, employers and health care professionals can improve breastfeeding rates and increase support for breastfeeding:
Communities should expand and improve programs that provide mother-to-mother support and peer counseling.
Health care systems should ensure that maternity care practices provide education and counseling on breastfeeding. Hospitals should become more “baby-friendly,” by taking steps like those recommended by the UNICEF/WHO’s Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.
Clinicians should ensure that they are trained to properly care for breastfeeding mothers and babies. They should promote breastfeeding to their pregnant patients and make sure that mothers receive the best advice on how to breastfeed.
Employers should work toward establishing paid maternity leave and high-quality lactation support programs. Employers should expand the use of programs that allow nursing mothers to have their babies close by so they can feed them during the day. They should also provide women with break time and private space to express breast milk.
Families should give mothers the support and encouragement they need to breastfeed.
Family members can help mother’s prepare for breastfeeding and support their continued breastfeeding, including after her return to work or school.
According to the “Call to Action,” breastfeeding protects babies from infections and illnesses that include diarrhea, ear infections, and pneumonia. Breastfed babies are also less likely to develop asthma, and those who are breastfed for six months are less likely to become obese. Mothers themselves who breastfeed have a decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancers.
A study published last year in the journal Pediatrics estimated that the nation would save $13 billion per year in health care and other costs if 90 percent of U.S. babies were exclusively breastfed for six months. Dr. Benjamin added that, by providing accommodations for nursing mothers, employers can reduce their company’s health care costs and lower their absenteeism and turnover rates.
“I believe that we as a nation are beginning to see a shift in how we think and talk about breastfeeding,” said Dr. Benjamin. “With this ‘Call to Action,’ I am urging everyone to help make breastfeeding easier.”

Hospital Meeting Postponed till Spring

We are sad to say that we will be postponing our hospital meeting until the hospital removes the current H1N1 Flu Regulations- which in essence, ban all hospital visitors under the age of 18 from entering the building.

We hope to resume the meeting once the regulations are removed and the hospital returns to open and unrestrained access, hopefully by Spring. We will keep you posted! We will seek alternative meeting spaces for our PM meeting until then.

If you or someone you know is interested in attending our PM meeting, please contact us directly for PM meeting info.

Our AM meeting at the library will be the same, well into 2010!

Our Silent Auction at our World Breastfeeding Week Celebration at Porter Library, Sept. 26 from 10am-1pm will have a rockin' silent auction- we are getting some very lovely auction items so start budgeting for great stuff that raises money for our great cause!

We will be meeting the third Tuesday evening of every month from 6pm-8pm in Conference Room A, located on the ground floor of Stafford Hospital, starting in August 2009.

This will hopefully serve our area moms better as we will have meetings available about every two weeks and will serve moms who need to meet in the PM. We will maintain our AM library meeting, the first Thursday of every month as well. Those who don't feel comfortable in the hospital setting will find comfort in the public library space we hope.

We also hope to build a better relationship with Stafford Hospital and encourage baby-friendly status, though we know this is not a minor feat.

We hope to see you there! Our first PM meeting will be August 18, 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some great facts from LLLUSA as we countdown the days to our World Breastfeeding Week Celebration Sept. 26, 2009 at Porter Library!

• Human milk has been shown to kill cancer cells in a laboratory dish and has been used in oncology.

• Mother’s milk has immune properties that can deliver a particular antibody in response to a new germ in the baby’s environment.

• Breastfed babies require shorter pre- and post-surgical fasting.
• No two mothers produce identical milk.

• Mother’s milk is uniquely suited to meet her baby’s nutritional needs.

• Breastfeeding decreases the incidence of dental cavities and the need for orthodontistry.

• Up to 50% of the iron in human milk can be absorbed by the infant, as compared to 10% in cow’s milk, and 4% in iron-fortified formulas.

• Adoptive moms, grandmothers, and yes, even men have been able to lactate for an infant.

• Breastfeeding reduces the risk of ovarian and pre-menopausal breast cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis. The more months a women breastfeeds over her lifetime, the greater the protection.

• The amount of fat in a mother’s milk varies from feeding to feeding and from week to week. The fat content of the milk changes even during a feeding.

• Mothers of premature infants produce milk that is higher in protein and other nutrients than milk produced by mothers of full-term infants.

• Breast milk contains stem cells.
